The men’s tennis team dropped to Westmont College on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Christopher Newport University on March 3 with both matches ending 7-2. The two losses put the men’s overall record at 3-6 and their Golden State Athletic Conference record at 2-4.
The Eagles picked up a single and doubles win against Westmont. The Warriors are currently ranked 11th in the country.
Freshman Phillip Westwood and doubles partner sophomore Luke Mountain gave the Eagles’ their only doubles victory with a 8-2 win.
“We wanted to get as many points as we could,” Westwood said. “We knew it was going to be a tough match, but we wanted to make it a competitive match. They are our rivals, and we didn’t want to let it slip easy for them.”
The lone single win came from freshman David Garcia, who took his opponent to three sets 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
Westwood came close to getting a third win for Biola. Westwood came the closest of the singles matches to forcing the third set, but fell 7-5 to his opponent in the second sets tiebreaker.
The men went into the match against Christopher Newport with the hopes to end their own five match losing streak and stop CNU’s four match win streak.
Westwood won his singles match against Justin Cerny 6-3 and 6-2. Westwood’s doubles partner Mountain also won his singles match 6-4, 6-2. Mountain and Westwood came close to winning their doubles match, but fell 8-6 in the end.
The Eagles are looking to break their six match losing streak this week and get back on track to improve their standing in GSAC play.
“Personally I’m hoping to give the best I can and be a good team player,” Westwood said. “As a team we are focused on bringing glory to God in both defeat and victory.”
The men will travel to Pasadena to play the California Institute of Technology on Friday, March 6 at 3:30 p.m.
