Hey Friends,

I love words and the outdoors.  I spend most of my time in Long Beach, California.

Comeback Queens

The softball team kicked off their 2015 season with a double header against La Sierra University. In both games, Biola was down by a significant amount of runs, but came back late to win. The Eagles are now 2-0 in their overall season.

In the first game of the day, neither team earned a run until the third inning. La Sierra was first to get on the board with a homerun from left fielder Melanie Vidarri to put La Sierra up 2-0. Shortly after, shortstop Gennie Garbellini sent out a sacrifice fly to bring La Sierra’s lead to 3-0 at the top of the third.

Senior third baseman Heather Hall also made a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring home sophomore outfielder Kasey Hormel and give the Eagles their first run of the game. Senior outfielder Brooke Madrid brought in her sister, junior catcher Bria Madrid to shorten La Sierra’s lead to only one at the bottom of the third.

La Sierra could only produce one more run in the top of the sixth, giving Biola a chance to catch up. The Eagles scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take their first lead of the game. Biola held on to their lead and secured the first win of the season 5-4.

The Eagles found themselves playing catch up early in the second game. La Sierra quickly scored three runs and then picked up another in the top of the second to lead 4-0. Hall earned the first run for the Eagles, with a double to left field to bring in Bria Madrid.

La Sierra scored their final run in the top of the fourth with a confident 5-1 lead. Biola did not back down and came back yet again thanks to Hall, who brought in three of her teammates with a hit out to left center that tied up the game.

Freshman first baseman Selina Sherlin sealed La Sierra’s fate with a homerun in the bottom of the sixth to bring home freshman second baseman Bailey Dean putting the score at 7-5.

The Eagles will play another doubleheader today against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University starting at 12 p.m.
